Re: EL PERU Y SUS ORQUIDEAS II !!!!

    Chaubardia heteroclita (Poeppig & Endlicher) C. H. Dodson & D. E. Bennett

AKA: Cochleanthes heteroclita (Poeppig & Endlicher) R. E. Schultz & Garay,
Huntleya heteroclita (Poeppig & Endlicher) Garay, Maxillaria heteroclita
Poeppig & Endlicher, Zygopetalum rhombilabium Schweinfurth.

ORIGIN/HABITAT: Ecuador and Peru. Plants grow in wet forests on the lower
eastern slopes of the Andes. In Ecuador, they are collected in the
southeastern Provinces of Morona-Santiago and Zamora-Chinchipe at
3300-6900 ft. (1000-2100 m). In Peru, they are found in the Department of
San Martín between Tarapoto and Lamas at 2300 ft. (700 m) and in the
Department of Junín near Chanchamayo at 4750 ft. (1450 m).

CLIMATE: Station #84455, Tarapoto, Peru, Lat. 6.5S, Long. 76.4W, at 922
ft. (281 m). Temperatures are calculated for an elevation of 2300 ft. (700
m). Record extreme temperatures are not available for this location.

    Cultural Recommendations:

LIGHT: 1500-2300 fc. Plants need rather shady conditions, so light should
be somewhat filtered or diffused. Brisk, continuous air movement is best.

TEMPERATURES: Throughout the year, days average 84-87F (29-31C), and
    nights average 64-67F (18-20C), with a diurnal range of 17-23F (9-13C).
These temperatures reflect about the warmest conditions under which this
orchid should be grown. Because of the range in habitat elevation, plants
should adapt to conditions where days average 71-77F (22-25C), nights
average 52-57F (11-14C), and the diurnal range is 18-25F (10-14C).

HUMIDITY: Reports are not available for this location. Records from nearby
stations indicate that humidity probably averages 75-80% year-round.

WATER: Rainfall at Tarapoto is light to moderate throughout the year with
a somewhat drier period in winter. Conditions in the habitat are
undoubtedly wetter than indicated by the rainfall averages at the weather
station, however, and even more moisture is available from heavy dew and
mist. The rainfall pattern in the habitat is probably the same, with a
similar drier period in winter and early spring. Cultivated plants should
be watered fairly heavily while actively growing, but drainage must be
excellent, and the roots must be able to dry fairly rapidly after
watering. Because these plants have no water storage capabilities, the
medium must never dry out completely.

FERTILIZER: 1/4-1/2 recommended strength, applied weekly. A high-nitrogen
fertilizer promotes vegetative growth in spring through midsummer, but
using a fertilizer high in phosphates in late summer and autumn promotes
    blooming the next season.

REST PERIOD: Growing temperatures should be maintained throughout the
year. Water should be reduced in winter, especially for plants grown in
the dark, short-day conditions common in temperate latitudes, but plants
should never dry out completely. Fertilizer should be reduced or
eliminated until new growth starts and heavier watering is resumed in
spring. New growths are susceptible to rot, so they should be watered
carefully to keep water from lodging in the tube formed by the young
leaves. Rot in new growths may be prevented to a large extent by spraying
a mixture of fungicide into the tube of the new growth.

GROWING MEDIA: This epiphytic orchid is best grown in a perfectly drained
open basket loosely filled with osmunda or shredded tree-fern fiber with
some chopped sphagnum moss mixed in. As these plants are intolerant of
having their roots disturbed once established, but are also intolerant of
stale conditions around the roots, an open, well-aerated medium that
breaks down very slowly should be used. Hawkes (1965) reported that many
growers experience serious difficulties with closely related plants grown
in various bark mixes and suggested that these be avoided. When repotting
is necessary, it should be done just as new roots are starting to grow
which allows the plant to become reestablished in the shortest possible
time with the least amount of stress.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES: The bloom season shown in the climate table is based
    on reports from the habitat.

    Plant and Flower Information:

PLANT SIZE AND TYPE: A variably sized, 24 in. (60 cm), sympodial epiphyte.

PSEUDOBULB: Very small and inconspicuous. The flat, rectangular
pseudobulbs are closely spaced on a short rhizome and enclosed from the
base by several distichous, overlapping leaf sheaths, each 1 of which is
    leaf-bearing.

LEAVES: 6-22 in. (15-55 cm) long by 1.2-2.6 in. (3.0-6.5 cm) wide. A
single erect to arching, thinly leathery, dark green leaf is carried at
the apex of the small pseudobulb. The sharply pointed leaves have several
fairly prominent longitudinal veins and gradually taper to a narrow,
longitudinally folded, petiolelike base. The leaves on the upper sheaths
are about the same size as the apical leaf, but the ones on the lower
    sheaths may be somewhat shorter.

INFLORESCENCE: Up to 6 in. (15 cm) long. The rather short, erect flower
spike is produced at the base of a recently matured growth, emerging from
    the leaf-sheaths.

FLOWERS: 1. A single, rather spreading blossom is carried at the apex of
the inflorescence. Flowers have sepals and petals that are pale to dark
tan-yellow with 4-5 brick-red longitudinal veins, a white to pale purple
lip with a darker bluish purple callus, and a white to pale lilac-purple
column with a cream anther. The egg-shaped to lanceolate sepals and petals
taper to sharply pointed apices. The dorsal sepal is 1 in. (2.5 cm) long
by 0.4 in. (0.9 cm) wide near the base and is erect at the base but curves
forward so that the tip projects forward over the column. Lateral sepals
are 1.3 in. (3.3 cm) long by 0.3 in. (0.7-0.8 cm) wide. They are obliquely
spreading at the base but curve or twist somewhat along their length so
that their tips are sometimes convergent and sometimes divergent. Petals
are 1.1 in. (2.8 cm) long by 0.3 in. (0.7 cm) wide. They spread obliquely
upward from the base to be held fairly closely to each side of the dorsal
sepal. And like the dorsal sepal, they curve forward along their length so
that their sharply pointed tips project forward. The blade of the lip is
egg-shaped to lanceolate with a rather narrow, sharply pointed apex. The
lip is 1.5 in. (3.9 cm) long by 0.6 in. (1.6 cm) wide near the base of the
blade. It projects forward from the base but curves downward rather
sharply toward the apex. The callus at the base of the lip is concave and
has several teeth or keels with round or blunt tips. The bow-shaped column
is about 0.4 in. (1.1 cm) long and has a pair of broadly triangular wings.

    HYBRIDIZING NOTES: N/A.
